The Skin Clinic
The Skin Clinic
What is the Skin Clinic? The skin is the window to our inner health. Often when we experience rashes, tight skin, dryness, itchiness, pigmentation changes, and general malaise, it is the body communicating to us through the skin. Michelle realized that what you put on your skin is indeed important, but many of the skin concerns and/or goals clients were discussing required internal supports, and lifestyle recommendations.
In 2021, Michelle graduated from the Elderberry Academy of Herbal Medicine with a Diploma in Clinical Herbal Medicine. Not only did this two-year intense program give deeper clarity to knowledge Michelle had acquired through self-study, but it opened paths to supporting her clients through the intelligence of plant medicine that she had not taken the time nor had the direction to previously practice.
The skin may be thought as a superficial layer to the depth of our human system, it is nonetheless the first interface we experience with the world and is directly impacted by our overall internal health. The skin is also our largest organ. When supporting clients with aesthetic skin care concerns during changes in hormones, maturing, illness, stress and otherwise, the herbalist has a profound role in supporting the whole-body system.
The bodily systems work together to keep proper functioning of the human body, and when working well add to the natural luminance of the skin. The nature of our skin does have factors such as genetics and inherent beliefs that do make some clients more predisposed to certain challenges, but this is where the herbalist can take the time to determine through proper exploration the systems that could best be supported by herbs, with the goal of enhanced skin care and health.
The health of our internal systems has a direct impact on the aesthetic quality of the skin including the musculoskeletal systems, circulatory, immune, along with the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and endocrine organs. Good digestive function is important for proper assimilation of nutrients. When these systems are impacted negatively, cell repair and elimination of defective cells may lessen, leading to skin conditions. In supporting the systems of the body, we must support the tissues that group together to form organs. In improving the vitality and tissue health of the body we will support the overall goal of skin enhancement for the client.
The Herbal Medicine Diploma accompanying an Honours Bachelor of Social Work gives Michelle a rich background of working with clients to get to the root of symptoms. We may support clients with herbal teas, tinctures, glycerites, topical salves, a lifestyle plan incorporating diet, supplementation, and potential activities both physical and emotional. We are client focused and work with the client on protocols that are a good match to achieve results.
Michelle specializes in adult and child eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne, sensitive and severely dry and damaged skin, hyperpigmentation and ageing. All things skin, we are here to help! Nevertheless, we support clients with health goals and concerns that extend beyond the skin and into overall bodily supports.
